Drummer and composer Ikue Mori got her start playing drums for Arto Lindsay's pioneering No Wave band DNA in the late 1970s, and has been working as an electronic solo artist since the early '80s. Her latest, CLASS INSECTA, explores ambient and electronic textures, utilizing Mori's skill with programming and drum machines. The album's title resonates with the clicking, intricate music within, sounding at times like the magnified (and highly musical) movements of insects. Like all of Mori's output, the work has avant-garde tendencies, but there is a lush, inviting feel to the sonic world here that makes listening to this work like a walk through a dripping, primeval forest. |
