Reviewed by Horn Book Guide Reviews (Horn Book Guide Reviews 2011 Fall)
This volume, rich in photographs, describes alligators in the wild, including differences from crocodiles, habitat, physical features, diet, and behavior. Discussion of alligators' endangered status--and their "amazing comeback"--is also included. An "Animal Tale: The Choctaw Hunters" story is appended. The writing is informative, but the long chapters and lack of a table of contents are slight drawbacks. Bib., glos., ind. Copyright 2011 Horn Book Guide Reviews.

Each book provides a scattershot overview of the reptile's "xtraordinary" physical characteristics, diet, habitat, behaviors, reproduction, and development. Large, clear photographs extend the information presented in the stiff texts; unfortunately, the design is overly busy. Gimmicky "Top Five Xtreme" countdowns about run-ins with humans add little to the presentations--and oddly contrast with the book's assurances that attacks are rare. Bib., glos., ind.
